Behavioral Interviews
posted Monday, February 1, 2010 3:15 PM
As you prepare for your next job interview, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the different interview styles you may run into. In a traditional interview, which is the style we tend to be most familiar with, you will be asked about your skills, your interest in the organization and position, and your overall professional history. Preparing for a traditional interview requires researching the organization and becoming comfortable explaining why you feel you are the best candidate for the job.
There is another interview style that is becoming more and more common; the behavioral interview. This style is focused on using past experience to predict future behavior. So, the employer is trying to get a sense of how you would handle certain situations if you were hired. Here's an example: the interviewer may say, "Tell me about a passed work situation that involves a conflict you had to solve between two parties. How were you able to do so?" Here, the interviewer is interested in learning about a real life situation you experienced to see how you handle conflict resolution. When asked a behavioral interview question, you should always respond with real experience, not one you've made up. One of the worst things that can happen in your job search is ruining your credibility, which will most likely ruin your chance of landing a job. You can never be sure what sort of situation the employer will ask about, so preparing for a behavioral interview can be a little difficult. Before any interview take some time to think back on situations where you have truly showcased your talents as a professional. This can be focused around leadership, conflict management, your ability to keep your cool under pressure, or any variety of traits you feel showcase your strengths as a candidate. Many times employers want to see how you will handle situations as part of a team, so be sure you are not only prepared to discuss situations where you worked individually. Thinking of past experience you can share with the recruiter ahead of time will take the pressure off of having to think on the spot. With job interviews, regardless of the style you encounter, preparation is the key. Walk in with examples and experiences you can offer that will help position you as the best candidate for the job. You have a lot of great experience, don't be afraid to share it. CBS 5 Weekly Employment Update

Addressing Gaps in Your Resume
posted Monday, January 25, 2010 11:48 AM
Whether you have recently chosen to re-enter the workforce after taking time away, or your job search has simply taken longer than you expected, many of you are faced with the issue of handling a gap in your resume. Luckily, gaps in work experience are not the scarlet letter many people perceive; as we are finding more and more legitimate reasons why people have taken a hiatus from the workforce. It's also no secret that the current economy has played a part in the delay of employment for many candidates.
So, now that you know it's acceptable to have a gap or two in your work history, what do you do about it? My first piece of advice, and this resonates to every piece of your job search, is to be honest. Do not attempt to lie the gap away. Information is very accessible in today's world and you can't afford to ruin your credibility as job seeker. You also want to avoid ignoring the gap all together. Let's face it, employers are going to wonder what you did during this time. Not addressing it can provide the perfect setting for recruiters or hiring managers to create negative perceptions about what occurred during that time period. They may assume you had a previous employer you don't want them following-up with. So, what do you write about that time period? Start by explaining what you did; even if it is not employment-related. For example, let's say you took a year or two off to be a stay-at-home mom or dad. Add that to your resume and list the skills gained that you feel make you a better candidate. This could include the ability to multi-task or make important decisions under pressure. If you spent a period of time traveling, discuss what you learned, such as the ability to adapt to new environments or quickly build rapport with new people. Now, maybe your job search has just taken longer than you expected. Don't sell yourself short by overlooking everything this experience has taught you. Include any associations you joined or volunteer opportunities you completed (if you don't have any, this is a gentle hint to seek some out). Regardless of the reason, a gap in your resume should not keep you from positioning yourself as a great candidate. Look at the relevant skills and experience you gained during that time and be prepared to meet questions about this head on. Continue to focus on how you can benefit the organization you are applying to with the experience you do have, rather than focusing on times you were not employed. CBS 5 Weekly Employment Update

Using Numbers in Your Resume
posted Monday, January 18, 2010 9:05 AM
With 2009 a thing of the past, it's the perfect time to look ahead and focus on your job search goals for 2010. As we know, your resume is one of the main building blocks for a successful job search; so let's look at how you can improve the way you position your previous experience to get 2010 started off right.
Most resumes are relatively similar. You may format things differently, but for the most part you have your contact information, your previous work experience or history, your educational background, and any additional involvement or skills you feel would be of interest to an employer. While this seems pretty straightforward, you would be surprised at the impact a few small changes in your wording can make. (Check out our new JResume tool to help you reformat, reorganize and share your resume). One standard rule I always follow when revising resumes is to quantify as much information as possible. Adding numbers and measurements will not only help make your resume more professional (and a bit more impactful, in my opinion), it also gives employers a very clear idea of how you can benefit their business. I'll give you a few examples: * Rather than, "Provided customer service to a variety of clients and customers", say, "Averaged a 90% year-over-year client retention rate for over 500 clients and customers".

Gain Experience in a New Field

Some interesting opportunities can present themselves if you are unemployed in today’s economy. For instance, you have the ability to switch over to a brand new industry without anyone so much as batting an eye. Think back to a few years ago. It would have been difficult for someone to simply change professional courses without prior experience or a really, really, really, good connection. Today, the world has taken an unexpected turn and there are many highly qualified candidates who are not able to find work as quickly as they expected. It’s not uncommon for some of these fine job seekers to venture out and try something completely different; or do I dare say, something they have always wanted to do. If you find yourself in this position and are ready to dive head first into a new field, I have a few words of advice. First, be sure you are highlighting your transferable skills on your resume (these are the skills that you have learned from previous positions that are not industry specific, (think conflict resolution, relationship building, etc). Second, use your time to gain whatever experience you can. Here are a few ways you can go about doing so:

How to Get the Job When You are Overqualified
posted Monday, October 5, 2009 10:48 AM
It is not uncommon for job seekers to expand their job search past positions they would normally consider. This could mean you're looking into a new field or considering taking a position a little lower on the totem pole to get on board with a desired company. While these may seem like logical moves to you, employers may be concerned. For example, you're in a job interview and you think it’s going pretty well. Then you hear it....the dreaded, “I think you may be overqualified for this position”.
Let's take a look at what this really means and the best way to handle that situation. The top two reasons recruiter are concerned with an overqualified candidate are: 1. The recruiter may feel you'll become bored with the position because you already have extensive experience in this area; which could affect your longevity with the company. 2. Your expereince warrants a salary that is higher than the recruiter is prepared to offer. So, if you have been labeled as overqualified, the first thing you should do is simply ask the recruiter why he or she feels that way. If it is a salary issue and you’re not prepared to come down on your salary request, this may not be the job for you. However, if your salary is negotiable let the recruiter know and open a discussion about other options; such as bonuses or perks that would be attractive to you. If you learn that the recruiter is worried about the your extensive experience, you can address this a few ways: 1. Inquire about other positions within the organization, putting emphasis on how you feel you are a great fit for their company culture and mission and really believe you can do great things there. 2. Explain how you are excited about the opportunity to turn this position into something bigger and better than it’s ever been. Many employers are concerned that overqualified candidates will not stay with the organization very long. Explain your investment in their organization and how you are viewing this role as a stepping stone in your career there. 3. If you are interested in a position that is held by multiple people in the organization, focus on how you’d be a great person to set the standard for excellence. Your previous experience can be very valuable to others. 4. Explain how you are looking forward to learning how their company works within that department/area of expertise. While you have a hefty amount of experience; you will be learning so much from the new people and practices this organization has in place. It is important to avoid "dumbing down" your resume or removing a lot of your experience to appear less qualified. Having said that, you should only include relevant experience on your resume as you do not want to overwhelm the recruiter. It may be tempting to customize your resume so much so that you do not appear overqualified. This can be damaging because a position that better suits you within the same organization may come up at a later time, and you will not be taken as serious candidate. Remember, there are many systems available to employers for tracking applicants for open positions. It is up to you to show an employer why you are a valuable asset to their company. Turn being overqualified into a positive.
