GOVERNOR UNVEILS NEW PROGRAMS FOR MATURE WORKERS
PHOENIX – Governor Janet Napolitano unveiled two new programs for older Arizonans who are looking to continue in or return to the workplace, during an address today at the Governor’s Conference on Aging.
“The face of aging is changing, and we have to make sure older Arizonans have the supports they need to live with dignity and independence,” Governor Napolitano said. “Part of independence is having work and volunteer opportunities outside of the home. Arizona leads the nation in terms of the opportunities available to mature workers, and I’m excited about two new programs that will do even more for Arizona seniors.”
The Governor announced the creation of the AZ Mature Worker Job Bank and Resource Website, online at www.azmatureworkers.com. Developed by the Governor’s Advisory Council on Aging, this resource will provide a venue for the mature workers searching the job market and for the employers looking to hire them. Employers will also be able to post jobs on the site for free.
The site was developed in partnership with Jobing.com, at no expense to Arizona taxpayers.
The Governor also unveiled a new program – Mature Worker-Friendly Employer Certification – which will provide special recognition to employers who commit to creating a workplace environment that values mature workers. The certification is also designed to assist employers in addressing projected labor force shortages.
These two programs add to the Governor’s previous initiatives that have improved care and quality-of-life for Arizona’s seniors. In 2007, the Governor’s Office on Aging opened, quality ratings and surveys for every Arizona nursing home and assisted living facility were made available online at www.AZCareCheck.com, and the state’s Adult Protective Services program began investigating 100% of allegations of abuse. The Governor has also introduced the CoppeRx Card to provide Arizonans with discounts on prescription drugs, and has worked to move Arizona toward electronic prescription systems that lower health care costs and reduce potentially dangerous mistakes.
The Governor’s Conference on Aging is a biennial conference being held through Friday, May 16 at the Phoenix Marriott Mesa and the Mesa Convention Center. This year’s theme is “Myth Busters: Breaking the Myths of Aging.”

“Claim Your Name” is the name of a social networking experiment being run by Bill Austin for some of the Job Seekers of the Scottsdale Job Network.
We have found that almost all employers use some aspects of social networking, although most of them do not recognize it as such. Recruiters, hiring managers and staffing professionals use online search engines and social networking sites to locate potential candidates (sourcing) and to research job candidates and their backgrounds.
Claim Your Name is actually a social network for job seekers to enable them to take charge of their online identity and make it much easier for recruiters and employers to find them online.

Diabetes Expo Phoenix - American Diabetes Expo
PHOENIX Arizona — On Saturday, April 26, 2008, the American Diabetes Association will once again host the free Diabetes Expo—an annual, one-day event showcasing the latest products and services for people affected by diabetes. This highly interactive Phoenix Diabetes Expo event includes activities for people of all ages, including a fun Youth Zone with exciting activities and information for children with diabetes and their families. The Diabetes Expo also provides the public with a unique opportunity to talk with health care experts and obtain important medical and nutrition information.
“If you or a loved one has diabetes – or is at high risk of developing the disease – Diabetes Expo provides a fun, relaxed environment to learn a great deal about the important aspects of prevention and management of diabetes and its serious complications,” said Howard Shulman, DO, FACP, FACOI, Diabetes Expo Chair. “The Diabetes Expo is for all people affected by diabetes, as well as anyone interested in healthy eating and active living.”
Diabetes is the nation’s fifth deadliest disease, and it has no cure. In 2005, there were approximately 469,000 residents of Arizona who self-identified as having diabetes, nearly 7.5 percent of the total population (Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance Survey, 2005). Diabetes can lead to serious complications and premature death, but people with diabetes can take steps to manage the disease and lower the risk of complications. Early diagnosis and treatment of diabetes is critical. Unfortunately, many people living with diabetes do not even know it.
More than 75 exhibitors are participating in the 12th annual ADA Diabetes Expo in Phoenix, which will be held Saturday, April 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Phoenix Convention Center, Halls F & G (33 S. Third St. in Phoenix, Arizona 85004). Admission is Free. Stop by “ADA World” and participate in interactive cooking demonstrations, live Web site demonstrations, and find out how the American Diabetes Association is helping people with diabetes and their families in your community.
