Passions Workshop RSVP Needed

posted Sunday, April 27, 2008 11:22 AM

Just a quick reminder to RSVP and sign up for the Passions Workshop if you have not already done so.

There is limited seating and Maria does an excellent job of presenting and facilitating this.

Exploring Your Passion – Putting It To Work
(a special workshop for job seekers)

NOTE:  THE DATE FOR THIS WORKSHOP WAS RECENTLY CHANGED FROM TUES, APR 29, 2008.

NEW DATE:  TUES, MAY 27
9 AM - 4 PM at Temple Chai
4645 E. Marilyn Road
Phoenix, AZ 85032-4839

Description

“Do you love what you do?” If you’re one of those “lucky ones” who can answer a resounding “Yes!” to this question, then this seminar is not for you.  But, if you’re not, then you’ve probably asked yourself if there’s a job or career out there that’s a better match than what you’ve experienced - one that can be more satisfying and have more meaning in your life - and how you might go about finding it.

This workshop is designed to help people who have asked themselves those questions. Job seekers often limit themselves to what they “have always done” because it was the career that defined them for many years. They tend to lose sight of their many gifts, interests, strengths, and wealth of skills developed through life experience. This workshop utilizes proven tools to help individuals identify their strengths, talents and preferences - what they’re basically good at and really enjoy doing, and can prove to be useful in opening up job search options.

Presenter

Maria Wojtczak has 20+ years of organization development (OD) experience and worked with a wide range of organizations. She has worked with Chris Vicari, Director of the Scottsdale Job Network, offering the Passions workshop and Job Transition workshops for the last five years.  She currently serves on the SJN Board and is a member of the Curriculum Development committee.  Maria is a graduate of the University of Michigan.  She is also the owner of DrivingMBA, a driver tutoring facility here in the valley http://www.drivingmba.com

Register via Internet by May 26
Seating is limited to 30 participants and there is a minimum enrollment of 12 participants to run the workshop. Because SJN provides assessment booklets, binder and printed materials, there is a fee of $25 for this event.  To register and make payment:  http://www.eventbrite.com/event/106918797

Lunch/Snack
Bring a sack lunch and beverages for the day.  If possible bring something to share with the group as a breakfast treat in the morning or a snack in the afternoon.

General Inquiries
Contact:  David Bell, chicagoman419@yahoo.com

Scottsdale Job Network (SJN) is a non-profit community group of business leaders and volunteers. We are not a job placement forum, and we do not match candidates to openings nor do we send resumes to employers or recruiters. There is no guarantee of employment either directly through this group or as a result of association with SJN. We do, however, provide education in the job search process and all attendees have the opportunity to meet and work with people who offer support and guidance during employment transition.

The value of SJN lies in the skills, business networks and personal passions of our members. Membership is open to everyone willing to share their skills and anyone interested in local networking or in need of employment transition support.

SJN at Jobing. . . and a good time was had by all

posted Saturday, October 27, 2007 7:17 AM

On Thursday evening, Oct 25, SJN hosted its first social networking event at the offices of Jobing.com.

We were a group of 30 people--current members, alumni, recruiters, board representatives and a few first-time participants at SJN.

Holly Schor of Jobing.com was our host and spent time with me explaining the Jobing-SJN relationship.  Holly also used the room's two large screens to project images of SJN's profile page and video clips on the Jobing website.

Bill Austin took the helm and navigated onto the SJN website and explaining ways we can help increase hits on it by making links from other websites.

Kurt Anzelmo answered questions while demonstrating features of SJN's Yahoo Group. . . a picture is worth a thousand words!

During the evening, networking contacts were made and help was offered to members.  Thanks to all who attended--it was especially good to reconnect with several alumni members.

Thanks to all volunteers!  We will consider hosting other such events in future.

Free Resume Reviews

posted Friday, October 12, 2007 9:00 AM

SJN Members Get Free Resume Reviews.

Scottsdale Job Network (SJN) is  fortunate to have the support of professional resume writers at every SJN meeting.

Donna Tucker and Martha Rockwell, both of the Resume Writers Council of Arizona (RWCA), regularly critique resumes from 9-9:30 AM.

Donna is the President of the RWCA.  Martha is also a certified career coach. They offer the resume critiques free of charge.

Both Donna and Martha will be at Temple Chai on Tuesday, Oct 16, 2007.

If you are interested in a resume review, we recommend arriving before 9 AM to get some time with one of them.   Also, our program format allows time from 9-9:30 AM for networking.  If we see you sitting and reading the paper before the meeting, we may just ask you to go introduce yourself to someone else in the room.  The best use of the time is to mingle and get to know others, listen to each other's marketing pitch, offer help where you can, ask for contacts . . . network

BTW, we are in the room setting up at 8:30 AM--always appreciate an extra pair of hands!

See you on Tuesday morning.

GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES NEW ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MODEL FOR ARIZONA

posted Friday, October 5, 2007 5:23 PM

Thursday, October 4, 2007

PHOENIX – Governor Janet Napolitano today unveiled a new private-public-nonprofit collaboration geared toward streamlining, unifying and enhancing Arizona’s economic development efforts. Rather than competing with one another, Arizona companies will work together to ensure Arizona’s position in the global marketplace.

"Our goal is to attract and grow businesses in Arizona to keep us economically strong," said Governor Napolitano. "We want the next Fortune 500 and high-growth companies in our state, and are committed to collaborating on diversifying and modernizing our economy."

The new partnership – unprecedented in Arizona – involves a model that utilizes a coordinating, nonprofit board to work on policy and recommendations for statewide economic development, and lead positioning and branding for the state of Arizona.

This coordinating board – known as Arizona Economic Resource Organization (AERO) – will provide guidance and a voice for public policy issues related to both public and private funding of economic development in Arizona to the following entities: Commerce and Economic Development Commission (CEDC), Greater Arizona Development Authority (GADA), the Arizona Department of Commerce, Science Foundation Arizona (SFAz), and a formalized and expanded Arizona Global Network (AGN). Similar economic development models have shown success in other regions of the United States and worldwide.

The new model for Arizona has already begun to take shape . AERO will work with the presidents of Arizona’s three universities, and collaborate with representatives from the CEDC, GADA, Commerce, Science Foundation Arizona, AGN and others. AERO will operate as a nonprofit, 501(c)(6) and be funded by private and other dollars.

"A tremendous amount of work has gone into this economic development model," said Napolitano. "We are looking forward to collaborating with all of the entities involved to promote Arizona in the new and global economy."

The CEDC assists in developing a 10-year strategy for Arizona, and serves to develop and launch "economy defining" initiatives that have a fundamental impact on statewide regional and local economies. Recent projects include funding for the feasibility and organization planning for Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and the Critical Path Institute in Tucson.

is the entity that provides low-cost financing to political subdivisions, special districts and Arizona Indian Tribes for the creation or improvement of public infrastructure projects that enhance economic development efforts of local communities.

The Arizona Department of Commerce is the state government agency responsible for statewide economic development efforts, including community development business attraction and development, and houses the Arizona Energy Office and the state’s Film Office.

is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization consisting of CEOs of Arizona corporations. Its goal is to build and strengthen scientific, engineering and medical research programs and infrastructure to increase Arizona’s global competitiveness.

, also a nonprofit 501(c)(3), will include the membership of all economic development organizations in Arizona, including the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities, with representation from the state’s higher education system, the Department of Commerce and other entities. AGN will be funded by private contributions and other dollars.

Membership for AERO and AGN will be announced in the coming weeks. More information regarding these organizations is attached.

Why Did He Hire Me?

posted Thursday, September 27, 2007 3:45 PM

A friend of mine, Wes Zimmerman, is currently writing and posting a series of articles on his weblog about the hiring process and how perception and first impressions fit into that process.

Since he is an expert on that topic and the author of a book called "The Perception of a Difference", I thought that the readers here might have an interest in reading his perspective on the hiring process and how you can directly benefit from understanding that process.

Two installments have been posted and there are more to come.

You can subscribe by e-mail or using a feed reader from the site or from here to be sure you get the rest of the installments when they are released.

Scottsdale Networking Groups

posted Thursday, September 27, 2007 10:17 AM

In and around Scottsdale there are a number of Networking Groups that help people connect for a variety of purposes.

Some of these groups meet for business reasons such as trading leads, doing business by referrals, for moral support, for building of community, relationships and partnerships.

Another major reason for networking is for the purpose of identifying jobs available and for filling those job openings. A large percentage of available jobs don't appear in the newspaper or online at job posting websites.

One of the best means of discovering this "hidden job market" is through the practice of networking. Your friends, acquaintances and referrals can be very helpful in finding a job but as your career moves through various phases, networking with people outside of your close circle of friends becomes more important.

By meeting people, letting them see your face, and hearing what they have to say you are tapping into the vast number of jobs that simply don't exist until someone identifies a need for them and tells a friend, who tells a friend, who tells a friend, who tells you.

People that you meet at these Scottsdale Networking Groups can help you tap into the hidden job market and find the best job to utilize your knowledge skills and abilities.

One of the members of the SJN Board of Directors maintains a large list of networking groups for Scottsdale and the rest of the Greater Phoenix area. This list identifies all of the networking groups and their purposes and enables a person to find just the right opportunity for networking within the Valley of the Sun.

Join Scottsdale Job Network today and gain access to this valuable networking resource.

Volunteer Opportunities

posted Wednesday, September 26, 2007 4:45 PM

The other day I wrote about Volunteer Opportunities with the City of Tempe and the Tempe Public Library's Volunteer Fair.

A variety of Volunteer Opportunities are also available with Scottsdale Job Network.

These Volunteer Opportunities include the following SJN Committees:

Programs: Works with the Executive Director to develop, schedule and coordinator SJN meetings and workshops.

Meeting Operations: Ensures efficient and effective bi-monthly meetings by lining up volunteers for hospitality and meeting facilitation.

Membership: Attracts new members to SJN, serves as Yahoo Group moderators, and supports alumni initiatives.

Marketing: Promotes SJN activities within the organization and in the community. Defines and develops potential alliances that benefit SJN.

Curriculum: Career Coaches, HR and senior business professionals work together to develop the content of the SJN 7-Step Job Transition Process, SJN’s core curriculum (under development).

Administration: Work directly with Executive Director on various administrative tasks.

Please let us know if you can help by writing to info@scottsdalejobnet.com or by speaking to Chris Vicari, or one of the Board members.

Thank you,

Bill Austin
