Blog Post: THANK YOU for Reminding Me

She also did another thing – she reminded me of how important it is to say a genuine thank you.  Oh, we tell you all the time to remember to send a thank you note after an interview.  But what about all the other people who help you along the way?  We might say it, but what about acting on it?  Think of how much effort it takes to write a note – buying the card, writing it out, buying a stamp (I have to admit that the last time I needed a stamp, I didn’t even know how much it cost!), and then actually getting around to mailing it.  Think of how great it feels when someone puts that much effort toward acknowledging something you did!  An email is great, but a gracious handwritten card really makes a genuine connection.

And like my grandma encouraging my son to read through her kindness, you can create a little bit of “pay it forward” and encourage a cycle of connection.  It feels awesome to be appreciated, and makes us more likely to be open to helping another person out.  A thank you is a small gesture with a big impact.

p.s.  I’m going to print this out and send it to my grandma with a hand-written note.  And maybe my son can read it to her.
