Blog Post: Yuma Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) raises money for Breast Cancer Research!

posted Thursday, October 23, 2008 10:50 PM

Yuma, Arizona October 11, 2008:

Students from the Yuma High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapters have been conducting their annual Homecoming Spirit Chain sale to benefit the American Breast Cancer Society, which researches treatments for women who are diagnosed or have breast cancer. The clubs have met and exceed this year’s donation goal by collecting $2,031.20.

The links that make up the Homecoming Spirit Chain are blue and white strips of construction paper. The club members go around the school selling these links to homeroom classes. The homerooms are encouraged to donate and make a chain with the links they have purchased. The FBLA members completed the sale today; members collected all of the individual classroom chains, and then used the chains to decorate Doan Field for the Homecoming celebration. Since this year’s charity is the American Breast Cancer Society, Yuma High School FBLA will be adding one more color to the Spirit Chain mix: PINK.

"Our FBLA members look forward to selling the blue, white, and, as of this year, pink links to our school's homerooms to promote breast cancer awareness," said Lorie Honeycutt, FBLA-CBE Advisor. "It has been a memorable experience for our members promoting breast cancer awareness and supporting our team during Homecoming. This year, the students used a new marketing strategy to raise additional funds. Every student who purchased one spirit link received a breast cancer awareness sticker, students who donated $1 received a pink beaded necklace, and the students who donated five dollars received a pink support bracelet. Their business strategy was effective. They topped last year’s donation by over $700! ”

The Yuma FBLA's next focus will be the Yuma High School 100 Year Celebration. The club members will be raising funds for competition travel and scholarships by selling commemorative photos. For additional information regarding FBLA or to join the club, contact Lorie Honeycutt or Tamara Kay at Yuma High School, (928) 502-5279.
