Blog Post: Overcoming obstacles and helping others to see their greatness!
posted Monday, December 8, 2008 4:47 PM
I moved to Phoenix as a Hurricane Katrina survivor. I knew no one in the community and so I thought I would get involved helping youth as I had back home. During my high school and college years I had volunteered in various organizations, but Phoenix Youth at Risk was the first program that I witnessed that not only had a major impact on the youth, but on me as well!
As a Katrina survivor, my struggles with overcoming all the obstacles that presented themselves when I felt there was no way out, is my primary source of motivation towards greatness. Rebuilding my life, my goals, and finishing my education after my school flooded in 2005 and closed its doors, challenged me to overcome any obstacle that stood in my way and opened new doors for myself. I use my testimony to inspire the youth in the New Pathways mentoring program - that if I survived that experience, then they to have the possibility of overcoming all obstacles that they may face in life. Phoenix Youth at Risk is by far the most structured, focused, and organized mentoring program for youth that I have ever volunteered with. They have different objectives and goals for each one of our youth and mentor workshops. They helped me build a foundation for myself by being a place that I could build my own new community as a new resident of Phoenix . I give Phoenix Youth at Risk much praise! They have an unwillingness to give up on valley youth! They are a focused, goal oriented, and well structured organization. Lastly, they get praise for the fact that as a mentor you get personal with the youth about their commitments, as well as, completing their past to go forward with their future.
