Blog Post: Don't Over-Promise In Your Job Interview
posted Monday, January 12, 2009 10:10 AM
As the job market grows more competitive, job seekers are looking for different ways to convince recruiters they are the best candidate for their open position. One technique to shy away from in your job interview is over-promising. It may be tempting to say “yes” to any request the recruiter has; thinking this will make you look like a better candidate. However, agreeing to every request can send a red flag to your potential employer. The best strategy is staying true to what is important to you dealing with your work life. If the recruiter asks if you are fine working late nights and traveling 90% of the time, don’t say yes unless you can really commit to it. Recruiters will be able to pick up on a less-than-honest answers and you risk coming across insincere. Over-promising can also cause the recruiter to fear you will not live up to your many commitments. You also put yourself at risk of creating a work environment that you will not be happy with. While it may be time for you to broaden the scope of what you are willing to commit to in a job, be sure you are willing live up to the expectations you set.
