Blog Post: Relax: It's Just an Interview

posted Friday, January 30, 2009 10:05 AM

Yes, I know that times are tough and you are super nervous and excited that you have an interview lined up.

Now that the day of the interview has arrived, there are a million thoughts running through your head about what will happen if you don’t get the job, which is making you more nervous.  Once you arrive at the interview, you a wreck and have trouble holding small talk as the interview shows you to the conference room.  She asks you the first question.  You try to steady your shaking hands as your mind draws a blank.

You should be sure to prepare enough so you feel ready for the interview instead of feeling like a nervous wreck.  Also, if you’re relaxed, you’re easier to talk to and will make the interviewer feel more comfortable with you.

Follow some of these tips to settle your nerves before the big day as well as on the day of the interview.

  • Prepare, prepare, prepare- Go through all of your previous jobs and choose examples of accomplishments.  Be careful to not memorize your answers word for word because you run the risk of not seeming genuine and if you forget a word or two, it may throw off the rest of your answer completely.  Keep in mind that the more you prepare, the more ready and relaxed you will feel during the interview.
  • Visualization – Many athletes do this before a game.  If you can visualize yourself conducting the ideal interview, it is more likely to go as planned.
  • Role-play the interview with a friend acting as the interviewer.
  • Think positively- believe in yourself and your talents.  If you focus on messing up the interview, it’s more likely to happen.
  • Listen to soothing music.
  • Meditate- take deep breaths to help you relax.
  • Get enough sleep.  You want to show your best, most energetic self during the interview and it’s going to be difficult to do so if you’re struggling to stay awake or getting jittery from too much coffee.
