Blog Post: Take your pick of ethics headlines...

posted Thursday, February 12, 2009 11:32 AM

It normally takes me 10 minutes of watching the news to get the subject for my next blog.  This week, however, there were so many headlines I found it difficult to choose which one.  So take your pick:
  • CEOs of the nation's 8 largest banks being grilled on Capitol Hill for mismanaging the taxpayers bailout funds (trying to purchase corporate jet and paying bonuses the day before being purchased were two examples cited)
  • Peanut butter manufacturer shipping product they knew was tainted
  • "A-Rod" admitting using steroids and destroying not only the role-model but faith in baseball
  • Miguel Tejada indicted for lying to Congress about steroid use and facing one year in jail (probation more likely since this is a first-time offense...)
  • Australian wildfires deliberately set and endangering environment, wildlife and people
  • Michael Phelps smoking pot and losing major endorsements and reputation

Why am I bringing all of this up?  Because it is time for us to stand up and talk about ethics. These headlines are saying that bad decisions lead to bigger consequences if we try to lie or hide from the truth.  These headlines are also saying that people are willing to completely destroy their reputations and businesses for unethical behavior because they do not consider consequences of their actions.

As I continue to speak about ethics and offer our ethical awareness games and programs to companies, I hear personal and direct stories like this from people like you and me.  It is painful to hear, but we can take a simple action.  Yes, I said simple.  And fun.  Let's start a conversation on our definition of ethics.  I'm ready.  Are you?

I am a real estate broker and trainer, and was looking for material for an ethics course I am writing. It's so sad that I was able to find a lot of information; examples of poor ethical behavior. Ethics is a topic not to be debated. I realize what's legal isn't always what's ethical. It shouldn't matter. We need to be guided by our conscience as well as our society.
