Blog Post: Looking Up After Being Turned Down
posted Monday, March 2, 2009 1:15 PM
After you’ve put in hard work preparing for interview after interview, it can be devastating to get the turndown e-mail of phone call thanking you for your time and telling you that a more qualified candidate got the job. Or worse yet, you don’t receive a call back at all and wonder if the company is still in business. During times like these, it is important to overcome this obstacle and put your best foot forward for the next interview. Plus take the lessons that you learned from the experience because they will be likely to help you in your job search.
Many different factors could contribute to you not getting a job so don’t take it personally. Instead, take a day off from the job search to clear your mind if you’re angry or disappointed. After you have refueled and gained back your energy, you will be more prepared than ever to tackle the job search once again. Be optimistic. If you keep on thinking that there are no jobs and that you will never find a job, it’s likely to come true. It’s easy to become frustrated but you don’t want to show it to future employers. You want to make sure that you don’t appear disgruntled in your upcoming interviews or conversations. After receiving the rejection letter, you may feel compelled to call the employer and yell or write a nasty e-mail saying that you didn’t want to work at that company anyways, but you’ll be a lot better off if your resist the temptation to act in this manner. There may be another position that becomes open that you could potentially be considered for or you may end up working with the company in another capacity once you’re employed somewhere else. In any case, it’s not a good idea to burn those bridges. Think about the rejection as an opportunity to develop your skills for a better position. Staying positive increases your chances of getting the job you want and being successful in the future.
