posted Wednesday, April 22, 2009 1:57 PM

If you work in the media or entertainment industries, Arizona State University is offering several events and classes over the next several months that could boost your skill set or your professional network.

The p.a.v.e. (Performing Arts Venture Experience) Speaker series, offered by the Herberger College of the Arts’ School of Theatre and Film, will be offering presentations by the following persons over the next few weeks:

April 22 (tonight!): 6 p.m., Patricia Cardoso, director of the acclaimed HBO Films movie “Real Women Have Curves,” shares her vision of working in independent film.
April 29: 6 p.m., Brenda Goodman, independent film producer, discusses the nature of entrepreneurship, as it relates to producing such films as “The Ballad of Little Jo,” “Emma and Elvis” and “Mac,” among others.
May 4: 3 p.m., Sarah Wayne Callies, perhaps best known for her work in FOX television's “Prison Break ,” reflects on the entrepreneurial facets of working as an actor.

All speakers will present at the Lyceum Theatre, 901 S. Forest Mall, on ASU’s Tempe campus. The series is a great opportunity to meet others interested in film and theater, as well as learn more about making a living at it. For more information on the events, call (480) 965-5337.

Meanwhile, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication is hosting a series of classes through its New Media Academy this summer designed to retool traditionally trained journalists into multimedia professionals. Classes will be offered in website development and content, creating photos and graphics for the Web, and producing online video and audio packages.
The workshops start May 30 and run each Saturday (except July 4) through August 8. All classes will be held in the school’s new technology complex located at 555 N. Central Ave. in downtown Phoenix.
The workshops may be taken as a series or individually, and are open to the public, regardless of ASU status. Pricing and other details are available at: http://cronkite.asu.edu/newmedia.
