Blog Post: 10 Twitter Tools A Social Media Manager Uses

posted Friday, May 29, 2009 9:50 AM

There are hundreds of tools that have been created so you can use Twitter.  Usually, these tools are identified by Tweet(fill in the blank) or Twitter(your choice of noun, adjective, or verb).  Out of these hundreds of tools, I've decided to share the top 10 Twitter tools that I use almost daily in my social media manager role at Jobing.com.

1) Tweet3.  Allows you to manage multiple accounts without having to log in and log out.  Saves a lot of time when you're managing 38 accounts like (@JobingPhoenix, @JobingDenver, etc.)

2) Ping.fm.  If I want to send one message to Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, etc, then I can go to Ping.fm, type in my message, and press send.  Then that message is all over my social networks without having to log in and log out of each one. (Also see HelloTxt)

3) TweetLater. Allows you to schedule your tweets.  So if you're busy and don't have time to tweet, this tool is a real productivity boost.  (Also see FutureTweets

4) TwitterFeed. TwitterFeed is a tool that pulls an RSS feed and tweets to an account you designate it to.  Jobing.com uses this tool to populate over 700 job type accounts that are specific to industry and geographic location (ie @PHXhealthcare).  All a social media manager needs to do with this tool is make sure that it's working.

5) Twitterberry. This tool allows you to tweet from your Blackberry. When you download the application, you'll have a Twitter icon in your menu.  All you have to do is press that button and type in your tweet.  Every community member at Jobing.com has Twitterberry installed on their Blackberry so they can tweet when they're out at cool events and video shoots.

6) Twitpic.  This tool allows you to share photos on Twitter.  You can either send pics to Twitpic via Twitterberry, or you can just go to the twitpic website and upload your photo.  It's cool because you can see how many people viewed your picture too.

7) TweetDeck. Perhaps the most universally accepted and used Twitter tool.  It's like your cockpit for tweeting.  It shows all the updates from your followers, your replies, direct messages, and whatever search terms you want to appear.  I use it to see if anyone mentions the word 'Jobing.'  It allows me to immediately respond to any complaint and get the issue resolved right away.

8) Twitter Search. Similar to TweetDeck, Twitter search allows you to search tweets in somewhat of a real time fashion.  You can use this tool to see what competitors are up to, what people are saying about you, find people on twitter, and see what people are saying about a certain event, like #SHRM09.

9) Widget Box. This allows you to embed a Twitter widget on your website.  The coolest widget, and the one that is featured all over the Jobing.com website, is the widget with the latest tweet.

10) Google Analytics.  You have to see whether or not all this stuff you're doing on Twitter actually works, or if it's just getting lost in the noise.

And you were so skeptical!

CoTweet.com is also a useful tool for Social Media Managers - allows up to 4 people to tweet on the same account.
The ultimate tool for social Media Managers is http://social-smart.com

Had to toss in my $.02:

I like TweetScopp for monitoring current trends. The real time stream is fascinating to watch, plus it is a fully functioning Twitter site. Just waiting for the mobile version :).

TweetDeck is invaluable. I tried the Seesmic client and though it has a nice UI, TweetDeck's stripped down interface is just more "me".

Peoplebrowsr is good as well, especically for monitoring competitors as you can pull stats right from within the interface (tweets per day, per month, etc.).
