You may be wondering what a #hashtag is, what it stands for, and how to use it. Here’s the who, what, why, where, and how of Twitter hashtags.
What? A hashtag helps organize and group together tweets pertaining to the same topic or event. It’s the same concept as a tag on a blog post. Who? Anyone on twitter who provides updates about an event or topic should use a #hashtag. Why? By tagging your tweets with the #hashtag, you’ll be grouped into all the other tweets pertaining to an event. This will do many things: 1) Attract more followers for your Twitter account. 2) It will allow other people who search the #hashtag to network with you on Twitter, and also at the event. 3) It will give you an excuse to go to http://search.twitter.com and search the #hashtag to see what people were saying about the event. And you’ll be involved in the conversation. Where? On twitter, tweetie, twitterberry, tweetdeck, or whatever other twitter application you use. How? You create a hashtag simply by prefixing a word with a hash symbol: #hashtag. You then tweet about what you are doing, and attach the hashtag to it. For example, the official hashtag for the 2009 Social Recruiting Summit I was just at was #srs09. Search #srs09 on Twitter and get a feel for what went down at the event. Happy #tweeting!
