Blog Post: Ethics in the News - Healthcare reform

posted Friday, August 21, 2009 10:23 AM

I’m reading a book called Tribal Leadership by Dave Logan, John King, and Haley Fischer-Wright.  The book says that public perception has more weight than the truth.  That’s never been more evident than in the debates we’re seeing over health care reform. In town halls across the US, on TV talk shows, and on radio we’re being bombarded by messages from irate people on both sides of this issue. Many people have formed an opinion based on commentary from their favorite experts rather than on the facts as written in the actual health care bill.  Even I fell for an audio discussion by people who seemed to have solid credentials and sounded completely credible.

So I went to Google to find the truth.  My initial search came up with 41,400,000 entries.  Along side of white papers and the actual HR3200, which is 1018 pages (and crashed my computer trying to open it) I saw selections titled “Campaign for an American Solution”, and  “Obama wants to kill your grandma”.  I am not kidding folks.  No wonder people are so agitated over this proposed reform!  I finally refined my search and came up with the Thomas Library of Congress link to the bill introduced July 14 in the House.  You can check it out section by section or select only those topics that interest you.  Here’s the link -

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:H.R.3200: (make sure you include the colon at the end of the link)

Isn’t it time we accept some responsibility and find out for ourselves what the truth is?
