Blog Post: How Do You Impact Your Staff’s Work Performance?

posted Monday, September 14, 2009 1:16 PM

We recently conducted a survey about work performance with some of our clients. We received varied responses to our questions, and they revealed some concerns I would like to share with you.  A summary of responses is listed below each question:

 1.       How do you enhance the skills of the people working in your department?

  • Offering training is one solution, but may not be the most cost effective as there are many factors that impact the cost/benefit of training.
  • It is challenging for firms that have multiple offices to offer consistent training, and those firms benefit with on-line courses as the most effective method.  What they are finding is that, depending on the topic, this kind of training method needs to be followed-up with onsite coaching and reinforcement.
  • Encourage staff to attend available training courses that meet their job needs and interests; as well as their professional associations that offer professional development workshops.

 2.       When there is a performance problem, is it corrected effectively?

  • It is best to correct a performance problem when it is recognized and address the issue with the employee or the team, as appropriate.  Look at all the factors involved in the problem – i.e. the human behavior, and a diagnosis of the variables that affect performance; then determine the appropriate actions to take.
  • Performance problems can result in wasteful practices and impact the bottom line.  This sometimes occurs when there are multiple shifts and overlapping work responsibilities.  Performance must be measured in a way that supports the organization’s strategy.
  • Sharing information across multiple offices, or multiple locations, can benefit the entire company.  Information that is not adequately shared can affect the dynamics of the team.
