Blog Post: Today’s Question: Things I wish I had known in college…
posted Thursday, October 11, 2007 10:13 AM
Many of us had a fantastic college experience, and professional programs at many universities, including ASU, go to great pains to prepare their graduates for the “real world” of work. However, most of us have learned at least one thing since graduating that we wish we had known before we joined workforce.
For me, it was understanding the importance of teamwork on the job. I was an honors student in high school and college, and won several substantial scholarships based on merit. I worked very hard in school, but it was always a me-me-me sort of vibe. Later on, I was lucky enough to have bosses who emphasized the importance of harnessing my high-achiever energies toward boosting my team’s performance and not just my own. So we throw the question out to you: what is the most important job-related skill that you wish you had learned or understood when you were in college? If you’re an ASU graduate, and want to pass on your wisdom to the next generation, consider becoming active in one of our academically based alumni chapters. Most academic chapters plan joint activities with current students several times a year, and some chapters provide ongoing opportunities to mentor future professionals.
