Blog Post: Can artists make it in the workplace?
posted Tuesday, October 23, 2007 9:01 AM
The common wisdom about a career in the arts has often been “don’t quit your day job,” but ASU’s Herberger College of the Arts recently posted two delightful profiles of alumni who have found unique ways to develop their artistic passions into a livelihood.
Charles Kazilek, a 1983 graduate of the college’s photography program, describes himself as a devout artist who was seduced to “the dark side” – science. He’s combined his love of visual art-making and technology as director of technology integration and outreach in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University. Howard Pink, a 1966 graduate from the college’s School of Music, is a former French horn player with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra who shares his love of music and fun with school children through several innovative and engaging music programs. Pink’s wild brown hair, bushy gold eyebrows, handlebar mustache, his brownish-gray beard and everything-French-horn attire complement his programs, which include “Howard Pink and His Musical Garden Hoses” or “Everything You Wanted to Know About the French Horn but Were Afraid to Ask.” Pink makes music come alive, for adults and children, in a whimsical way. Artistic Sun Devils who want more advice on keeping that degree from gathering dust can connect with the College of the Arts alumni chapter by clicking here. Community Comments
