Blog Post: Volunteerism

posted Saturday, December 8, 2007 12:09 AM

This time of year always seems to bring volunteerism to the forefront of a lot of minds.  It does for me.

I met this week with the Executive Director of the Arizona Special Olympics, Tom Fraker.  He shared with me the valuable program Special Olympics has begun with St Lukes Health Initiatives to bring a unique service to businesses and community organizations that would bring volunteers into the non-profit community while building teamwork in the workplace.  You can find out more about the program at their website here.

Also this week I presented to the Arizona Chapter of the American Teleservice Association. Sometime ago they started a group called Call Centers Care.  They are utilizing a growing workforce area and providing volunteers where they are needed.  Just ask an ATA member about their flourescent green t-shirts. This group is currently collecting toys for the Pediatric Unit at the Maricopa Medical Center.  A place that often gets look over this time of year.  Here is an excerpt from an email of one of the staff at the center, “… It is not often that the pediatric patients at our hospital benefit from such generosity; I hate to say it, but we are often "passed over" on the holiday gift-giving list for more reputable hospitals such as Phoenix Children's and Banner Children's.  I cannot tell you how wholly grateful I am to you and your crew for thinking of our kiddos here at Maricopa Medical Center, nor can I fully express how needed and appreciated each and every item is to our pediatric patients and families.”   If you might have any extras toys this season let the ATA know by emailing Joe Nageotte here.

It is a great time of year to volunteer and provide where needed.  It is a great balance to our lives to be a part of something.  It can help in more ways than the obvious. Volunteerism could just be the next thing to land you that dream job.

Recently I met with New York Times Best Selling author Harvey Mackay and asked him about volunteerism and its importance in finding that best job.  You can view the interview below.

Have a great holiday season and think Volunteerism!
