Blog Post: What catches the IT Manager’s eye?

posted Friday, February 1, 2008 11:24 AM

One of the most important things in today’s technical workplace is the ability to communicate effectively. Sometimes as techie’s we forget that it is more than just what the computer does, if it works, if it is fast or if it looks nice. Today it is almost more important that we communicate it properly, understand it properly and work with others effectively. With all that said, a resume’s content is even MORE important that in the past. Having proper sentence structure, spelling and even presentation of the resume is important for numerous reasons:
  • Shows an eye for detail.
  • Demonstrates one of the most basic of communication skills (emailing, documentation).
  • Emphasizes the importance of first impressions.

Don’t start off trying to overcome these items (if you even get a chance to show your case). Use these simple concepts to solidify your resume:

  • Take your time during the job preparation process (make sure you explain how and why you are the right person for the right job).
  • Use other resources (spell checkers in Word are the obvious, but use friends to review, analyze other resumes of higher level individuals online).

These are the baby steps to putting your best foot forward in the job arena. I have found personally and professionally that these little things add up to a lot in the long run.
