Blog Post: Grocery Shopping and Job Searching
posted Thursday, March 13, 2008 9:21 AM
Grocery stores in America are huge. They are a big, scary place. As a result, you go with what’s familiar. You go with what you know. It is very difficult to get away from the products that are recognizable and comfortable.
Now take a job search. Looking for a new job can be a big, scary thing. When you go onto Jobing.com you have different options to search for job postings, just like you have different options for grocery store products. Like most consumer behavior, many job seekers become overwhelmed with the options and search for jobs they are familiar with. Or for those making their first career decision, they look at what their parents did. The problem is that what your parents did might not have given them pleasure, or what you did in your last job you might have disliked. In other words, you can change the grocery store you shop at just like you can change your employer. But simply changing the environment doesn’t mean that you will become healthier, nor will it infer that you’ll like your next job. Like mom used to say, you don't know if you like it until you try it. Just like you never know what you'll come up with if you search for something different than what you've searched for before. Brett Farmiloe is currently writing a book entitled Breaking the Square, which describes the cross country journey he and three friends took to explore different career paths and options on the Pursue the Passion tour.
