Blog Post: Relax, it's not the end of the world. Is it?

Today I read an article in the New York Times entitled “Asking a Judge to Save the World, or more”. It gave me unique perspective on the pressures associated with work and the common fear of failure.
The article is about a group of international physicists that have spent the last 14 years constructing a particle accelerator costing $8 billion. The instrument will be used to, “recreate conditions and energies last seen a trillionth of a second after the big bang”. While the pressures of this long awaited experiment and the associated budget, expectations and sheer magnitude would surely be overwhelming at times a new concern must certainly take the cake. Essentially, critics of the project argue that when used the accelerator runs the danger of creating a black hole and destroying the universe if not the world. While many scientists believe this to be unlikely it is agreed that the results of the testing are unpredictable at best. So while the experiment may not destroy the universe there is certainly any number of possibilities that would prove less than positive. The point of this blog is not to strike fear into the hearts of Phoenicians. The universe will be fine; we have super heroes to deal with that. But, next time we find ourselves anxiety stricken over the ramifications of a difficult professional decision it may be comforting to use this story for perspective. After all the fate of the universe has never, even arguably, been in my hands.
