Blog Post: The Power of Volunteering Your Time to HR Students
posted Friday, April 4, 2008 12:26 PM
This has been the fourth year that I have attended the Southwest Central Regional SHRM Student HRGames and Conference. The first year I attended as a student and competed in the actual HRGames. It was an amazing experience that not only helped to prepare me for the Professional in Human Resource (PHR) Exam, but allowed me to see the enjoyment and the lasting value of volunteering.
Since that first experience, I have volunteered my time to recruit and motivate students to embrace the profession of HR. Each year it is so exciting to see students become involved in their Student HR Chapters and to compete in the HRGames. It is a great opportunity to help mentor students and to watch them move on to become the next certified professional in HR. This year ASU & Ottawa Students attended the Regional HRGames and Conference in San Antonio , TX . ASU competed in the HRGames and did a fabulous job and Ottawa students attended the conference portion and walked away with so much knowledge for both professional and personal application. Seeing how the competition of the HRGames motivated ASU to want to learn more and how the conference motivated Ottawa to learn new concepts and teach others, makes volunteering my time worth every minute. If you ever have the opportunity to volunteer your time to help motivate and mentor future professionals along their career path, I would highly encourage you to get involved and enjoy every minute of it!
