Devereux – Past, Present and Future
Devereux was founded in 1912 by a pioneer in education, Helena Devereux, who had a vision to provide children, with special learning needs, an opportunity to grow and develop. With that framework and the support of generous contributors and the leadership of other visionaries, Devereux expanded its services and geographic territory to become the largest, not-for-profit provider of behavioral healthcare in the country. Currently, we operate 15 centers in 11 states, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas, and serve more than 15,000 individuals, annually.
Devereux has a continuum of care for children, adolescents and adults, ranging from residential and day treatment programs, community-based group homes, respite care programs, hospital inpatient and outpatient settings, supervised apartments, foster care homes and special education day schools. In addition, we offer vocational and pre-vocational training.
We assist clients who have challenges including: mental retardation; autism; psychological, psychiatric, emotional, sexual and behavioral disorders; post-traumatic stress disorder; substance abuse disorders; learning disabilities; victims of physical and sexual abuse and neglect; multiple disabilities; and neurological impairments.
![]() Devereux’s philosophy of care defines what individuals, families and agencies can expect from Devereux. Devereux’s Philosophy of Care focuses on three core principles: effective and accountable services that are individualized to meet the needs of each client and stress positive, behavioral approaches. It is this philosophy that guides Devereux’s decision-making practices in all programs and serves as the foundation for current and future initiatives.
Devereux's Institute of Clinical Training and Research (ICTR) will soon celebrate its 50th anniversary as a leading provider of research and clinical training. Over the course of its nearly 50 year tenure, ICTR has trained more than 1200 psychology and allied health professionals in professional and pre-doctoral training programs. ICTR has also been instrumental in creating the Devereux Early Childhood Initiative that produced the first nationally standardized instrument to evaluate a child’s emotional and social strengths and provides specific strategies to help that child succeed. Research by the Devereux Center for Effective Schools is addressing disruptive and anti-social behaviors in urban schools, with the research findings expected to assist all schools. ICTR is also the largest national training program for suicide prevention.
Looking forward, as we approach our century mark, Devereux will need to excel in several critical areas to maintain its strength. These key areas include: providing its diverse client base with the highest quality of care; recruiting and retaining a compassionate and dedicated workforce; inspiring our communities to generously support our mission; and finally, being excellent stewards of our wonderful resources.
