Break into Health Care Without Going to Medical School!

posted Wednesday, April 29, 2009 8:12 AM

Health care has become an unbeatable presence when it comes to today's economy. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) Current Employment Statistics, pharmacy technicians held about 285,000 jobs in 2006.

The need for certified pharmacy technicians is expected to increase and according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, this is much faster than the average for all occupations.

Melissa Murer-Corrigan, executive director and CEO of the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board was recently interviewed by MSN.com's Christina Couch. "The field is expected to grow about 12 percent in the next few years, partly due to the graying population," states Murer-Corrigan." Since pharmacies are one of the most accessible forms of health care available, pharmacy technician positions are everywhere."

Aside from helping pharmacists prepare prescriptions, dispensing medications and maintaining insurance paperwork, dedicated certified pharmacy technicians fill an important role in ensuring patient safety and are increasingly in demand. This may be an ideal career choice for individuals that are interested in pursuing a career in health care without paying thousands in tuition for medical school.

Once students complete a pharmacy technician certification program and pass the PTCB exam, certified pharmacy technicians can search for jobs in not only private pharmacies but also hospitals, nursing homes clinics and home care companies.

In an effort to accommodate this need, the Center for Workforce Development at      Chandler-Gilbert Community College has started enrolling students for the Summer 2009 Pharmacy Technician Certification Program. Click here to view available dates and times for Fall 2009 & Spring 2010.
