Overcoming Obstacles

I recently started a short video on first jobs based on the interviews done on the Pursue the Passion Tour. What I was surprised to find was that most of our interviewees didn’t generally succeed their first time out. Their first jobs were primarily obstacles or learning experiences that simply contributed to the overall journey. With that said the video quickly became a compilation of stories about obstacles. On April 30th the Jobing Foundation will be presenting Experience Your Future Day, a hands on career experience for 7,000 8th graders in the Phoenix area. 8th graders from the Ward Traditional Academy, here in the valley, speak about what they would like to do when they grow up and their questions surrounding those ambitions.

Leon Young has spent the entirety of his professional career working with one organization. Starting as a night security guard he proceeded to learn all facets of "hospitality 101" while working for Starwood Hotels. His tenure with the company also allowed him to become an authority on the culture and processes of his organization. He now works as a GM for the company he started with over 20 years ago. In this video Leon speaks about some of the more significant turning points in his career.

Jim Sherraden currently manages the historic Hatch Print Shop, the oldest print poster shop in the world. He speaks about finding his passion at a time in his life when he need it most. Speaking to his love for history he now gets to take part in the preservation and production of historic memorabilia on a daily basis.

Lonnie Williams Jr. grew up in Tucson, AZ and stayed in state to attend The University of Arizona on a football scholarship. Realizing athletics was not something he would be able to do as a profession Lonnie committed himself to his dream of becoming a lawyer. A graduate of Yale Law School Lonnie was recently named a Southwest Super Lawyer and has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America since 1995.

David Rensin has written or co-written 12 books, 5 have been New York Times bestsellers. In addition he has written for Rolling Stone and been a contributing editor to Playboy since 1981. The oral historian speaks about his experience being an independent journalist and one's ability to dictate their own career path.
