Job Description

Facilities Management, Central Plant, seeks an experienced General Maintenance Mechanic.


Essential Duties

Maintain and repair cooling towers, chillers and boilers to include pumps, air compressors, fan coil units, heat exchangers and engines. Repair piping systems and other auxiliary equipment. Work off ladders (up to 30 feet) and scaffolding to punch tubes, close valves and replace lamps. Perform routine cleaning of tubes. Wax and burnish floors. Trash removal and material recycling. Maintain written records. Drive a University vehicle. Ability to communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform the essential functions of the job.


Minimum Qualifications

Four years of general maintenance and repair experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Employee may be required to possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.  Some positions in this classification may be required to obtain an Environmental Protection Agency Type 1 refrigeration license upon employment.


Desired Qualifications

Experience in:

  • Heat exchanger maintenance and cleaning
  • Cooling tower fan, motor, and gear box maintenance
  • Maintaining threaded and flanged mechanical joints

Knowledge of:

  • Chiller operation (refrigeration cycle)
  • Electrical safety and troubleshooting techniques
  • Fan coil unit operation/maintenance

Evidence of:

  •  EPA 608 Universal CFC certification


Working Environment

Work in extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, restricted movement, intense noise, and dirty environment. Wear personal protective equipment (e.g. safety glasses, face shield, gloves).  Bend, lift and carry objects above the shoulder up to 75 pounds. Work off ladders (up to 30 feet) and scaffolding. Use hand tools (wrenches, shovel, squeegee, broom, vacuum, pallet jack, manual hoist, cleaning and paint tools, ratchets and sockets, VOM meter, gantry, tap and dies) and power tools (drills, grinders, pressure washer, tube cleaning machine, saws, mechanical hoist, impact wrench).

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment.  Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

Must pass pre-employment physical examination post offer of employment.
