ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS:
Must have successfully passed the department officer testing process in the last 12
months; that includes and assessment center, written testing, and interpersonal communications assessment.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The Fire Captain provides supervision and leadership in protecting the community from emergencies, including
medical, fire, hazardous material exposure, and natural and manmade disasters, and to promote an environment
of public safety Within the Community. In the absence of a Command Officer, an employee in this class may
temporarily assume full responsibility for duties of the Command Officer. The principal duties of this class are
performed in a work environment in which the employee is subject to potential personal danger. Employees in
this class are responsible for managing personnel, stations, equipment, and emergencies on an assigned shift (56-
hour week), or they may be rotated into 40-hour week, special administrative assignments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
o Directly supervise and evaluate Fire Engineers and Firefighters.o Respond to, command, and mitigate emergency incidents.
0 Determine best method of extinguishing fires and emergency response and direct ?refighting work until
relieved of command by a supervisor.o Supervise maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment, inspect apparatus and equipment to determine needfor maintenance and repair work.Supervise and participate in cleaning and minor maintenance of quarters, equipment and apparatus.Perform and supervise emergency medical technical skills and maintain certifications.Instruct training sessions for firefighters, fire recruits and Fire Explorers.Work with other agencies during large emergency incidents throughout the Community and surroundingcommunities.
0 Enter emergency incident, training, and other information as necessary into the department’s records
management system.
0 Conduct fire prevention inspections and educate the general public in fire prevention.
0 Evaluate work of subordinates and write performance appraisals.
0 Fire Captains certified as Paramedics perform the following additional duties:
Measure and administer drug therapy to assist patients;Administer cardiac monitoring device and defibrillate cardiac patients;
Provide advanced airway management;Perform a variety of more advanced emergency medical duties;Delegate tasks to and directs EMT’s in patient care and patient stabilization;
Lead tasks at emergency medical scenes.

0 Knowledge of rules, regulations, and operational procedures of the Fire Department in modern firefighting
activities.
0 Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision and training.Knowledge of local geography, including the location of fire hydrants and the major fire hazards of the GilaRiver Indian Community.Knowledge of current international fire code and modern investigation methods.Ability to conduct preliminary fact finding inspections and investigations, including evidence gathering.Ability to operate apparatus and equipment used in modern ?refighting activities.Ability to instruct and lead fire training sessions and courses.Ability to effectively plan, supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff.Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officialsand the general public.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High School diploma or GED and a minimum of two (2) years experience as a Gila River Firefighter to include
a minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
All Firefighter associated requirements, Fire Engineer requirements, Fire Instructor I (AZ, NFPA), Incident Safety
Officer (AZ, NFPA), Supervisory Training for Firefighters, Human Resources Management in the Fire Service,
Gila River Fire Officer Preparation, NIMS 701, MAG 400.Required to pass a background check and fingerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must continue
to maintain throughout duration of employment.Required to obtain a Tribal Driving permit. Valid state driver’s license with a current proof of driving record
for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be
submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the
