FLSA STATUS:  Exempt

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The job of Social Worker is done for the purpose/s of providing interventions related to both behavioral and academic success, referrals to District and community resources for students and/or families, facilitating communication between the District and families to enhance students’ learning environment, and supervising and facilitating on-site prevention services, related to both behavioral and academic success.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

  • Assess student and family needs (e.g. financial, medical, parenting skills, etc.) for the purpose of developing and implementing individualized support plans to achieve academic and behavioral objectives.
  • Provide individual and group support for identified students, as well as work with pre-existing and new District vendors.
  • Coordinate activities with a variety of outside service agencies (e.g. mental health, probation, medical, etc.) for the purpose of providing referrals for students and/or families.
  • Coordinate workshops for students and/or parents (e.g. parenting skills, effective communication, District programs, etc.) to better support students in their educational and behavioral progress.
  • Maintain case record and mandatory paperwork to document activities and comply with federal/state/district regulations. Confidentiality is mandatory in regard to student/family records.
  • Mediate conflicts between parents, teachers, and/or students to resolve issues that may impede student success.
  • Coordinate/implement prevention programs to meet needs of the school.
  • Attain current knowledge on federal/state/district policies and procedures (e.g. CPS reporting procedure, McKinney Vento, etc.) to assist students and/or families and to provide in-services for staff.
  • Participate/coordinate various committees (e.g. Student Support Teams, 504, Multidisciplinary Teams, etc.) to develop plans to address issues that may impede student progress.
  • Provide assistance with transportation for students/families for required services and/or meetings.
  • Respond to incidents of abuse for the purpose of reporting and/or investigating. Assist staff in reporting procedures.
  • Refer interventions that address unmet needs that may have a negative impact on students’ educational and behavioral progress.
  • Administer testing to incoming students.
  • Attain emergency substitute certificate to assist school’s needs.
  • If capable, translate/interpret documents and conversations between non-English speaking parties and District personnel or find resources to assist with task.
  • Effort will be made to stay up-to-date on certification.
  • Participate as a staff member at the assigned schools and assisting with shared responsibilities.
  • Site supervisor and/or prevention coordinator will determine other essential daily functions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):

      EDUCATION

  • Master's degree in Social Work
  • Bachelor's degree and actively seeking Master degree in Social Work
  • Certification preferred

KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):

      KNOWLEDGE is required to perform assessment, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of programming to prove efficiency and effectiveness. Capable of practical problem solving and decision-making. Knowledge of community development and collaboration to build strong community relations and basic knowledge of grant process. Demonstrated oral and written English proficiency, demonstrated ability to network and work together with a variety of key individuals and groups. Knowledge of pertinent codes, policies, regulations, and laws is also necessary.

SKILLS (position requirements at entry):

      SKILLS are required to multi-task and to upgrade in order to meet the changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: appropriate written and oral communication skills, time management, public speaking skills, data analysis, and the competence to complete necessary assignments by deadlines. Proficiency of the Spanish language is preferred.

ABILITY (position requirements at entry):

      ABILITY is required to use basic job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others under a wide variety of circumstances. Able to work with a significant diverse population is required. Problem solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action and reach solutions. Work with data of different types and/or purposes. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: meet deadlines and schedules, work under time constraints, adhere to safety practices, communicate with diverse groups, record keeping. Also, reliable transportation is necessary.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: occasional lifting, carrying, some climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
